Welcome to the Degrees in Healthcare Blog

Welcome to the Degrees in Healthcare Blog. We hope to provide a wealth of knowledge to readers interested in the educational aspects of the healthcare field.

Why a Degree in Healthcare is the Right Choice

Healthcare is the fastest growing industry in the United States. People choosing to go back to school to increase their occupational worth during the financial crisis are turning to healthcare because of the field’s rewarding opportunities and stability. Young students just applying for college are finding high prospects in the world of healthcare.

Healthcare is not just a new fad, either. Here’s the skinny on how it has been thriving for the past half a decade:

Healthcare Degrees Leading the Industry

2009: In Best Careers 2009, during the whirling downward spiral of the economy, occupational therapists came out on top. US News describes it as: “We take for granted our ability to button a shirt, use a computer, or drive a car. But many people—injured adults, children born with disabilities, elders beset by aging—cannot assume those skills.” With the average human lifespan increasing, and the baby boomer generation aging, physical and occupational therapy is going to do nothing but expand.

2008: When the economy’s saddening situation was becoming more and more apparent, people turned to the rise of healthcare as a sign of clear occupational growth still occuring in the United States. When unemployment jumped to 5.7% in 2008, the healthcare industry’s response was to add 33,000 more jobs–in the course of only a month.

2007: Business Week reported on how, in 2007, the healthcare industry more than doubled in size over a long thirty-year history.

2006: Psychology was in the top 3 leading choices of college majors in 2006, and the two specific studies that received the most growth–you guessed it, healthcare–were reflexologists and acupuncturists.

Healthcare is Not Just Doctors and Nurses

While a nursing degree is definitely a pursuit worth investing in, there are several overlooked facets of healthcare; did you know about cytotechnologists, or disease detectives?
